What veneers can help with

One treatment that can addressseveral concerns at once.

A veneer is a very thin ceramic shell bonded over the front of your existing tooth. Veneers can improve the appearance of a range of common concerns.

Stained or discoloured teeth

Veneers can cover staining that hasn't responded to whitening treatments.

Chipped or cracked teeth

A veneer can restore the visible shape of a tooth that has been chipped or worn.

Gaps between teeth

Small spaces between teeth can be closed with carefully shaped veneers.

Uneven or misaligned teeth

Teeth that look uneven or slightly out of line can be reshaped in appearance.

What to expect

How veneer treatment works.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We discuss what you'd like to achieve and any concerns you have about your teeth, examine your teeth and gums, and confirm whether veneers are suitable for you.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Depending on your case, we may gently recontour the teeth so your veneers blend in and look natural. Many cases need little or no preparation — we'll confirm what's right for your teeth before anything begins.

  3. 03

    Scans

We take a digital 3D scan of your teeth, which goes to our dental laboratory for fabrication.

  4. 04

    Temporaries

While your veneers are made — usually 14–21 days — you wear temporary veneers.

  5. 05

    Placement

Your finished veneers are checked for fit and appearance, then bonded in place.

What to know before you decide

  • Some cases need a thin layer of enamel recontoured or removed so the veneers sit naturally. Where this is needed, it cannot be reversed, and the tooth will generally always need a veneer or similar covering afterwards. Many cases need little or none — we'll confirm for your teeth at your consultation.
  • All dental procedures carry risks. Possible complications, alternatives and limitations will be discussed with you at your consultation before you decide anything.
  • Veneers can chip, wear or debond over time and may eventually need repair or replacement.
  • Veneers are not suitable for everyone — gum health, tooth structure, grinding and bite all affect suitability, which is assessed clinically.
  • Outcomes vary between patients. Any images or examples shown are illustrative only and are not a guarantee of your result.

Common questions

How long do veneers last?+

It varies between patients. Ceramic veneers often last many years with good care, but they can chip, wear or debond and may eventually need repair or replacement. We'll talk through what's realistic for your situation at your consultation.

Does getting veneers hurt?+

Preparing the teeth involves removing a thin layer of enamel, usually with local anaesthetic. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and typically settles. We'll explain exactly what's involved for your case before you decide.

Are veneers my only option?+

Not necessarily. Depending on your concern, whitening, bonding or orthodontic treatment may be alternatives worth considering. Part of the consultation is comparing the options honestly.

Is preparing the tooth reversible?+

Where recontouring or enamel removal is needed, it isn't reversible, and the tooth will generally always need a veneer or similar covering afterwards. This is one of the key things we make sure you understand before proceeding.

Do veneers always require removing enamel?+

No. Many veneers need little or no tooth preparation — sometimes called minimal-prep or prepless veneers. Whether any recontouring is needed depends on your teeth and the result you're after, and we'll confirm that at your consultation.

How do I look after veneers?+

Much like your own teeth: brushing, flossing and regular check-ups. If you grind your teeth, we may recommend a night guard to protect them.

How much do veneers cost?+

Cost depends on how many teeth are involved and the work required. You'll receive a written quote at your consultation, and any eligible health fund rebate is claimed on the spot through HICAPS.
